Pavement Art FAQ
What IS Pavement Art?
Pavement art is either flat or anamorphic (3D) artwork drawn or painted directly onto asphalt, sidewalk, or other pavement material.
Is It Permanent?
No! The pavement art materials I use are tempera paint, soft pastels, and chalk pastels. They give brilliant color and depth, but will wash away with normal weather and rain.
If the weather isn't washing all of it away fast enough for you, a power washer hose will very quickly take off the rest.
What Do You Charge?
Pavement artwork is a custom piece of art that is made possible by years of artist experience, planning, and a whole lot of outdoor time and movement that is intense on the body! These large scale artworks are also done with high quality materials and can vary greatly in detail upon design. Each piece is quoted individually, but if you're looking for a ballpark, estimates start in the lower triple digits. Travel fees are added for client's outside the city of Fredericksburg, VA.
Please use the contact page, or e-mail me at hammerspacestudioart@gmail.com to discuss your quote.
How Big Is It?
In order to be able to complete the artwork within a day, I try to keep pieces within, and most often smaller than, a 10x10 space. The woman in red pictured on this page was somewhere within a 6x8 space. I choose the size based on the client's intention, time in the day, and orientation/shape of the image.
How Do You Make It 3D?
The artist distorts an image over a grid in image editing software, prints the image as reference, then chalks the grid on the ground and draws the distorted image as it appears on the reference grid. Then, the image appears 3D when viewed from a specific angle. This effect is viewed best through a lens or photo.
Anamorphic art takes double or triple the space of flat art of the same visually appearing size because the image is distorted and stretched even if it doesn't appear to be from that special angle.
Who/When Is Pavement Art For?
No one says you need a reason to decorate your space with something beautiful! If you're looking for the perfect special occasion, though, here are a few ideas:

Can It Be Walked On?
Some simple standing for interactive photos is encouraged, but DO NOT walk regularly on the artwork. This will track the chalk around the piece and destroy the artwork. If you intend this wear, however - for a romantic chalk flower covered patio to slow dance on, for example - that is your personal choice (and a really romantic idea!)
Is There Anything That Isn't Allowed?
I am not currently offering realistic portraiture at this time.
I am happy to work on adult/18+ pieces in the appropriate settings.

Other Pavement Art Information
Bookings and Weather
All bookings must be made at least 2 weeks in advance.
Weather conditions will affect the available days for booking, as rain destroys the artwork and heat destroys the artist! This is especially important in the summer. For the safety of the artist, bookings are unlikely to be made on days with temperatures exceeding a risky high. Bookings are made for the early morning so that a large portion of the artwork may be completed before midday sun. If a shade canopy is available, this may be shifted later in the day.
If the artwork is booked for the day before an event, the client is solely responsible for keeping the artwork protected from the elements.
Because of cancellation policies, the artist will NOT schedule on a day with an 'iffy' forecast.
Property Permissions
If the Client resides in an apartment, townhome, or shared living facility, written permission on official letterhead from the property management, landlord, or governing authority is required, authorizing the Artist to perform the Work on the premises.
Planning
Designs are customized with the booking client. You'll receive sketches based on yours and the artist's ideas that will be tweaked until you approve the design. The design must be approved 5 days before the event. NO major changes will be made after the finalizing of the design.
Once the chalk is on the pavement, the design cannot be changed until rain erases the image. Keep this in mind when approving designs!
Cancellations
As Hammerspace Studio is a small business with an independent artist, there are cancellation and refund policies in place. These will be relayed by e-mail when planning and in the artist commission agreement.
